Driving DC

This morning was my first official day of driving in DC. I rented a car before today, and ventured quickly into the city, but it was on a Sunday...and as you know that doesnt count. This rush hour a.m. (in a car I borrowed from my aunt), I eased my way out of the safe terrain of downtown Silver Spring, Maryland and into the mean streets of the District of Columbia. And guess what? I SURVIVED!! It felt nostalgic, being behind the wheel.

The streets were busy this morning, but less so that I imagined it would be. I was able to shout profanities to drivers who cut me off, or wouldnt take the light before it changed, and who wouldnt inch their way into the intersection in order to make a left turn. Ahh...who would have thought that these would be things to miss about driving? With the radio on, and morning talk shows annoying me to no end, I was still in an altered state of bliss. Could being behind the wheel be a form of therapy? It's alone time with music and motion. Two of my favorite things. Why not, right?

This experience has secured my decision to bring my SUV up to DC. I was contemplating if I should do so...What would the insurance be like compared to LA? Is it going to be like the driving madness of NYC or traffic of LA freeways? How hard is parking going to be? Whats the price difference between the metro and escalating gas prices? But now that I am filled with positive driving aura...I feel more confident, and satisfied with the experience. There will always be the buses that get in the way, the oddity of congested roundabouts with lights, taxi drivers from hell, and the inevitable pedestrian who doesnt respect walk signs; however I want to be in that mix, if only for the therapeutic nature of the thing!

OMG, this is yours truly, Su Amiga Invisible. I love this blog. I had the same rush when I drove again in NYC for the first time. Yelling at the Bklyn drivers, who apparently know nothing of painted lines intended to divide traffic LANES! Not to mention the city bus drivers who run you over, pedestrians included. OHHH, and I will refrain from cussin' out the dollar van drivers on here, for that would require a blog of my own. But with all the hustle and bustle and yelling and pelting of insults that is inevitable to driving in these, ehem, wonderful cities, it is the rush that makes me want to do it all over again, day after day after day.... Now if only I could find an eardrum blasting horn!
